Hey Neighbor SMS Terms & Conditions

Hey Neighbor — free, private group messaging for personal use: neighborhoods, school buses, and carpools. Open to any neighborhood; neighborhood groups open one at a time as neighbors sign up.

Hey Neighbor sends the following kinds of text messages. Application-details texts have their own optional permission; group posts and offers begin only after you join:

(1) An invitation — a single message telling you your neighborhood is ready and inviting you to join it, if you asked to be told. This is its own program: one message, and no group posts unless you reply JOIN to it.

Application details — one text asking you to complete missing details, only if you separately opted in on your application.

(2) Group messages — posts made in your neighborhood group, delivered to you as text messages. You can reply by text and your reply is posted back into that same group. These begin only after you join a group.

(3) Command replies — a confirmation when you text HEY, JOIN, MUTE, UNMUTE, LEAVE, REPORT, OFFER, CLIP, HELP, STOP, or START. A coupon you ask for with CLIP is texted from our deals line, a second number you can save.

(4) Sign-in codes — a one-time passcode, sent through our verification provider, if you choose to sign in to the web app.

(5) Sponsored offers — once you have joined a free group, clearly labeled offers from local businesses, up to 8 a month, each as a short message of its own from Hey Neighbor Offers, sent from your group's own Hey Neighbor number. These are part of the group program you join with JOIN; the invitation and the join confirmation both say so. They are sent only between 9am and 8pm your local time, never on an individual neighbor's post or an emergency alert, and never by the sponsor directly. Offers are part of the free group program; the neighbor who runs your group can pay a monthly fee to run it without them, and replying STOP ends all texts including offers.

For application details: tick the separate optional box when applying for a chat. This permits one text asking for missing application details, in addition to the separately authorized invitation. Older invitation-only permissions do not authorize this text.

For the invitation: you give us your mobile number on our website and tick a box agreeing to one message. We send that one invitation when your neighborhood opens, and nothing else. Recurring group messages are a separate choice you have not made yet at that point — replying JOIN to the invitation is what makes it.

For the invitation, by text: you can also text HEY followed by the name of your area to (619) 314-5148. We reply once to confirm you are on the list — that reply may include a link for adding your street so your moderator can confirm you — and then send nothing further until your neighborhood is ready and we invite you to join it.

For group messages, by text: a verified neighborhood moderator sends you one invitation message, which states the message frequency. You opt in by replying JOIN to that invitation. We send you nothing beyond that single invitation unless you reply JOIN.

For group messages, in the web app: you can also join from onboarding or your account settings, which show these same disclosures and require you to agree before any message is sent.

Your consent is recorded with a timestamp in every case, and again any time you reply STOP or START.

The invitation is a single message. A separately authorized application-details request is at most one additional text. If you go on to join a neighborhood group: Message frequency varies with how active your groups are. Every post in a group is delivered to you as its own text as it happens. Each group also carries clearly labeled offers from local sponsors, up to 8 a month, unless the neighbor who runs the group pays for the ad-free plan. Expect up to about 400 messages per month for each group you belong to. Sponsored offers are only ever sent between 9am and 8pm your local time. Ordinary group messages can arrive at any hour; there is no quiet-hours setting.

Message and data rates may apply. Hey Neighbor does not charge you for text messages.

Reply STOP to any Hey Neighbor text message to opt out at any time. STOP ends every Hey Neighbor text and takes you out of all your groups. You will receive one confirmation message and then no further texts. Reply START to allow texts again; START does not put you back in a group, so reply JOIN to a new invitation to rejoin one.

You can also reply MUTE to pause neighbors' posts from one group without leaving it (sponsored offers and emergency alerts still arrive), UNMUTE to resume, or LEAVE to leave that group entirely.
